Your data never leaves your Mac.

Rowie works on your data right where it is. This page says exactly what the app, the website and the checkout do collect, and why.

Last updated

01The short version

Rowie is made and sold by MVP STACK LLC, which is the company responsible for the data described on this page.
Rowie reads your CSV, JSON, Parquet, Excel and SQLite files and your MongoDB databases. All of that happens on your Mac. The app has no account, no sync and no analytics.
The app talks to the internet only to check your licence, to look for updates, and to reach the servers and databases you connect it to. The website has no analytics, and buying a licence gives us your email address so we can send you the key.

02What the app sends

Nothing about your data. No file name, path, row, query or connection detail is transmitted to us or stored anywhere but on your own Mac.
When you activate, and occasionally afterwards while online, the app contacts our licence server with:
  • your licence key,
  • a random identifier the server issues for that installation, so a key can be tied to the Macs it is active on,
  • the name of your Mac as set in System Settings, so you can tell your Macs apart when you deactivate one.
The server records when each installation was activated, when it last checked in, and when it was deactivated.
To find updates, the app reads a feed at rowie.app once in a while. That request carries the usual details any web request does, such as your IP address and the app's version, and nothing else.

03Servers you connect to

When you open a remote file or a MongoDB database, the app connects to that server directly, never through us:
  • Files on your servers are reached with the ssh already on your Mac, using your keys, your SSH agent and ~/.ssh/config.
  • MongoDB connections go straight to the address in your connection string, including MongoDB Atlas.
  • Passwords you choose to remember are kept in your Mac’s Keychain.

04When you buy a licence

Payment is handled entirely by Stripe. Your card number goes to Stripe and never to us. Stripe's own privacy policy governs what it keeps.
Once a payment clears, Stripe tells us the email address you used and a session reference. We store that email, the licence key we generated for it, the Stripe reference and the date in a database on our server. The email is used to send you the key, to send it again if you lose it, and to find your purchase if you write to us about it.
Emails are sent through Amazon Simple Email Service. We do not send marketing email, and there is no newsletter to unsubscribe from.

05The website

rowie.app has no analytics, no advertising tracking and no cookies of its own.
Our server keeps ordinary access logs, which include IP addresses, for a short period to keep the service running and to investigate abuse.

06How that data is protected

The first defence is that there is very little to protect. There are no accounts, so there is no password to steal, and nothing about your data is ever transmitted to us.
  • Everything between your browser and this site travels over HTTPS, as does every licence check the app makes.
  • The licence database holds an email address, a licence key, the Stripe payment reference and the relevant dates. It holds no names, no postal addresses and no card details.
  • An activation record holds a random identifier for that installation and the machine name macOS reports. Neither means anything outside the licence it belongs to.
  • The database is a file on a server we operate. It is not exposed to the public internet and is reachable only through the licence endpoints described above.
If you believe your licence key has been used by someone else, email [email protected] and we will revoke it and issue a replacement.

07How long we keep it

Licence records are kept for as long as the licence is valid, because they are what makes your key work. Activation records are kept alongside them so you can move the key between Macs.
Server logs are rotated within a few weeks.

08Your choices

Email [email protected] and we will tell you what we hold under your address, correct it, or delete it. Deleting a licence record revokes the key, so we will confirm with you first.
You can deactivate a Mac from Rowie › Licence… at any time, which marks that installation as inactive on our server.

09Changes and contact

If this policy changes, the date at the top moves and the change is described here. We will not quietly start collecting something this page says we do not.
Questions go to [email protected]. The terms of use cover the licence itself.
